The Children’s Food Bill, presented to parliament in May 04, aims to halt the growing crisis in child health. Childhood obesity and other diseases are linked to a ‘junk food diet’. For example 9 out of 10 children consume more saturated fat than levels recommended for adults.
Developed by SUSTAIN, the alliance for better food and farming, the Bill is supported by a 116-strong coalition including the Soil Association.
The Bill aims to prevent food-related disorders through a range of measures together with legislation to make cooking part of the national curriculum, and to ban both the sale of unhealthy food and drinks in schools and the marketing of such products to children.
Charlie Powell of Sustain says, “Most in the food industry have no intention of curbing the promotion of junk food to children. Voluntary guidance is ineffective - what is needed is legislation.”
The success of the Bill will depend on securing high levels of cross-party political support. We urge you to write to your MP asking them to sign the Children’s Food Bill early day motion no: 1256.

Removing artificial colourings and preservatives from young children's diets could have a significant impact on reducing hyperactivity, says new research.
Researchers studied 300 children who were split into groups and subjected to different diets, some containing artificial additives such as tartrazine and sunset yellow.
They found that the three-year-olds became significantly less hyperactive when they were on diets where the additives had been removed. And they became much more hyperactive when they were put back on the high-additive diet, according to the study in Archives of Disease in Childhood.
The researchers, from the University of Southampton, said that removing the substances from products could be in the long-term interests of public health.
Manufacturers have come under increasing pressure from campaigners to reduce artificial colourings and preservatives from their products, particularly those marketed to youngsters.
The Southampton team, led by Prof John Warner, screened more than 1,800 three-year-olds for hyperactivity and allergies.
Parents' said that the children became significantly less hyperactive during the periods when there were no additives in their diets. As soon as the additives were put back in again, their hyperactivity levels increased.
The researchers warned the figures should be interpreted with caution as the changes were not reflected in the formal clinic assessments carried out by experts.
But they suggested that the parent's own views might be more sensitive as they saw their child's behaviour over a longer period of time and in more varied settings. |

Since my 11yr old boy has been taking the product ‘Eskimo’ containing Omega 3, 6 and 9s he has miraculously been able to concentrate and conform more at school. He even looks forward to going to school as he is no longer the ‘one in trouble’ all the time. He has also been ‘cleared’ of possible vaccine damage recently by a Homoeopath which clearly improved his tolerance to environmental chemicals (Chlorine in particular) and certain foods that hitherto previously made him behave in an odd, stupid and anti-social way. YIPPEE! |

that what we call the ‘terrible two’s’ is simply the child’s exaggeration of our movements and emotions to gain a full sensory-motor understanding of them. The child is intrigued by the physical sensations of these new-found emotions, and great theatrics often occur. We may label these outbursts as temper tantrums, when they are simply emotional, physical, multi-sensory learning activites. Expression through movement is very important to the learning of emotions and at this age the child has no cognitive or manipulative thoughts directing emotions!

According to the headlines on the front page of the Business Times on the 15/03/04 ‘Autism link to vaccine threatens drug giants’.
Apparently some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies face potentially huge legal damages as a result of renewed fears about a vaccine widely used in Britain to protect babies from Whooping Cough.
A new American study claims that infants injected with the vaccine which uses a mercury-based preservative were six times more likely to develop autism than those given the version now used in the U.S. The use of the mercury-based preservative was withdrawn in America five years ago; but the vaccine is still routinely used in Britain by the NHS.
The UK is believed to be the last developed country to continue to use baby vaccines containing ‘thimerosal’.
In the US, lawyers are already threatening a $50 bn (£28bn) class action aimes at Eli Lilly, which produces thimerosal over the years in dispute. The findings are potentially explosive in Britain because the Dept. of Health is still using the mercury-laced Diptheria, Tetanus and whole-cell Pertussis (whooping cough) jab known as DTwP.
In spite of promising to phase out thimerosal in 1999, it appears the NHS are still buying millions of mercury-laced DTwP from Aventis in France.
Note: DTwp is half the cost of the thimerosal-free jab from Britain’s GlaxoSmithKline (DTaP).
Parents can ask the NHS specifically for DTaP which is apparently a far superior product. |
